The Autonomous Administration of Northern and Eastern Syria, also known by the Kurdish name Rojava Kurdish رۆژاڤایا کوردستانێ, Rojavaya Kurdistanê; Arabic كردستان السورية, DMG Kurdistān as-sūriyya, Aramaic ܦܕܪܐܠܝܘܬ݂ܐ ܕܝܡܩܪܐܛܝܬܐ ܕܓܪܒܝ ܣܘܪܝܐ Federaloyotho Demoqraṭoyto l'Gozarto b'Garbyo d'Suriya), Western Kurdistan, is an autonomous region in northeastern Syria. Rojava emerged in 2012 as a result of the Syrian Civil War. The region is inhabited by Kurds, Assyrians, and Arabs. On March 17, 2016, an assembly of Kurdish, Assyrian, Arab and Turkmen delegates proclaimed the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria, then consisting of the cantons of Efrîn, Kobanê and Cizîrê. Rojava enjoys worldwide approval due to its functioning democracy, the pluralistic principles that are universally valid there and ensure equal rights for all people regardless of ethnicity, religion or gender, the rule of law and ecological sustainability. Since 2016, Rojava has been under attack and partial occupation by Turkey. The Turkish occupation is mainly against the Kurds and has led to human rights violations such as ethnic cleansing against the Kurds. Observers view the Turkish military actions as a war of aggression in violation of international law.
